Exact fields, not approximations

Every surface renders a specific sRGB value with no filter and no theming. A white screen is 255, 255, 255 in both light and dark mode.

The dim slider is the only control that changes what reaches your panel, and it says so whenever it is not at 100 per cent.

Measurements that are real

Refresh rate is the median of several hundred frame intervals, so one stall cannot drag a 144 Hz panel down to 58. Unsupported capabilities report as unknown, never as a negative.

It says what it cannot do

Every tool carries a visible limitations block. A build-time scan fails the release if a forbidden claim reaches any page.

Correctness over impressiveness

Median rather than mean. A pixel-perfect test refuses to answer under fractional scaling instead of returning a confident wrong number.

Nothing to sign up for

No account and no cookies. There is no server component at all, so there is nowhere for a result to go.

A dot that will not go away

Dead, stuck or just dust?

  1. Wipe the screen with a dry microfibre cloth first, dust is the most common false alarm.
  2. Run white to find dead pixels, then black to find stuck ones.
  3. Run the three primaries: a failed sub-pixel hides on white and shows on its own colour.
  4. Stuck rather than dead? The fixer is worth twenty minutes.

Patchy light on a black screen

Bleed, glow or clouding.

  1. Dim the room but do not switch the lights off, darkness exaggerates everything.
  2. Move your head. Light that follows you is IPS glow, which is inherent, not a fault.
  3. Light that stays put at an edge is backlight bleed.
  4. Blotches in the middle are clouding, usually from pressure in the panel stack.

Blacks look grey, or shadows vanish

Usually a setting, not the panel.

  1. Count the near-black patches on the PLUGE ladder in a dim room.
  2. If everything under code 16 is invisible, you have an RGB range mismatch.
  3. Set your GPU, console or TV input to the same range at both ends.
  4. Then check brightness and contrast, in that order.

Stuck at 60 Hz, or motion stutters

Check what you are actually getting.

  1. Measure the observed rate, it is a median, so one stall cannot skew it.
  2. Reading low? Check the OS refresh rate setting and your laptop power mode.
  3. Check that browser hardware acceleration is on.
  4. High jitter with the right average is stutter, not a wrong mode.

Where to start by device

Different hardware fails in different ways. These are the checks worth your time on each.

New monitor

Pixels, bleed, uniformity and refresh rate, in that order, before the return window closes.

Phone or tablet

Burn-in and touch response. Turn off auto-brightness and warm-light mode first.

Television

Judge from the sofa. Grey fields reveal the banding that ruins panning shots.

Laptop

Panels drift warm with age and drop to 60 Hz on battery. Check plugged in and unplugged.

Gaming display

Tune overdrive against a moving object. The strongest setting is almost never the best.

Buying second-hand

No return window, so marginal results matter. Burn-in and dead pixels never improve.

What this site will not tell you

A web page cannot reach a photometer, a colorimeter or your panel's firmware, so brightness in nits, contrast ratio, colour accuracy, pixel response, panel technology, screen size, bit depth and flicker frequency never appear here as results.

What is left is enough: exact colour fields, observed refresh rate, frame pacing, gamut and HDR capability, touch behaviour, and your eyes on a clean pattern.

Screen testing tips

Six habits that stop a healthy display from failing a test it should pass.

Let the screen warm up

Give a display ten to thirty minutes before judging colour or uniformity. Output shifts as it reaches temperature.

Turn off the enhancements

Dynamic contrast, vivid modes, motion smoothing and warm-light filters all change what you are looking at.

Use the native resolution

A scaled signal softens everything and will make a perfectly good panel look blurry.

Get the room right

Dim for black level and bleed. Normally lit for colour and uniformity. Never pitch dark, it fails healthy panels.

Judge from where you sit

Uniformity and dirty screen effect are whole-panel properties. From 30 cm away, every television looks broken.

Check the cable

A marginal HDMI or DisplayPort run can cap refresh rate, crush blacks and add banding all at once.

Frequently asked questions

Can a website detect dead pixels automatically?

No, and any site that says it can is overselling. A web page cannot read what your panel is actually emitting, because no browser API exposes that. What a test can do is fill your screen with exact, clean colour fields so a bad pixel becomes obvious to you. The looking is the part only you can do.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Every tool runs in the browser you already have, no account, no download, no extension. After your first visit the site works with no network connection at all, which helps when you are checking a screen in a shop or a storeroom.

Does anything I do here get sent anywhere?

No. There is no server that could receive it. Every test runs on your device and results are never transmitted. The only thing stored is a small preference for your theme, last-used colour and guided-check answers, all of it in your own browser. The privacy page lists exactly what that is.

How accurate are these tests?

The patterns are exact: every colour field is a specific sRGB value sent straight to your display. The measurements that exist (observed refresh rate, frame pacing, touch behaviour, gamut and HDR capability) are genuine. Everything else is your eyes on a clean pattern, and each page says which is which.

Which test should I start with?

If you have just unboxed a display, run the guided monitor test, which walks ten checks in a sensible order. If you are chasing one specific worry, go straight to the tool for it: dead pixels, backlight bleed, burn-in, refresh rate or touch response.

Why does this site keep telling me what it cannot do?

Because the alternative is lying to you. Browsers genuinely cannot measure brightness, contrast, colour accuracy or pixel response, and several popular screen-testing sites imply otherwise. Knowing which parts of a result are measured and which are your own judgement is what makes the result worth anything.
